What fabricators look for first in a DFM audit

Published

A practical walkthrough of the checks shops run before quoting—bend radii, tolerances, weld access, and drawing clarity—and how to fix issues early.

When a fabricator opens your package for the first time, they are not asking whether the concept is clever—they are asking whether they can quote it with confidence, release it to the floor without tribal knowledge, and ship good parts on the schedule you expect.

That first pass is closer to triage than criticism. Here is what usually rises to the top.

Material and thickness truth

If thickness, alloy, or temper do not match how the part will really be bought and cut, everything downstream becomes negotiable in the worst way: on the shop floor, under pressure. Lock buy-to specs and callouts that match stock availability.

Bend strategy and tooling reality

Bend counts, radii, and grain direction drive tooling choices and scrap. Early CAD often carries “default” bends that look fine on screen but fight standard punch sets or brake setups. We align bend strategies with how your target shops actually work.

Tolerances that match process capability

Tight geometric tolerances where sheet-metal processes cannot reliably hold them creates silent risk: fabricators pad quotes, add secondary ops, or push assumptions back on you. Where precision matters, tie it to datums and inspection intent; everywhere else, loosen thoughtfully.

Welding access and sequence

If welders cannot reach a joint predictably—or sequence is ambiguous—you get rework and distortion surprises. We look for access, fixturing assumptions, and implied weld symbols that match the WPS your vendor will want to run.

Drawing clarity over volume

More pages are not the goal—decision-grade clarity is. Consistent BOM structure, revision discipline, and notes that answer “how do we cut, bend, weld, and inspect this?” reduce email churn more than any slide deck.

If you want a structured review before your next quote cycle, we offer DFM audits with actionable findings your team and your shop can execute against.
