Material is often the largest line item on a sheet-metal quote. Nesting software can squeeze parts onto a sheet, but it cannot recover yield lost to geometry that forces awkward orientations, oversized blanks, or grain-direction conflicts.
Geometry that fights the nest
Long, skinny parts with one-way grain requirements waste sheet. Large internal cutouts that cannot become usable remnants waste sheet. Parts that must stay within a fixed blank size for brake setup may force rectangular buy that ignores nest efficiency. Designers who understand how shops nest—laser, punch, or combination—make better early tradeoffs.
Grain direction versus yield
Cosmetic faces and bend-critical flanges sometimes require grain orientation that reduces how densely parts pack. Call out which features are grain-critical versus optional so the shop can optimize nests where cosmetics do not matter. Blanket “grain parallel to X” notes on every part inflate buy without improving function.
Common vs. family nesting
Part families that share thickness and alloy nest better when overall envelopes are similar. Wildly different aspect ratios in one release force leftover skeletons that never get reused. When you control a product line, align blank envelopes where possible—or accept that mixed kits will carry lower yield and price accordingly.
Remnants and secondary ops
Shops that track remnants can improve effective yield, but only when your schedule and revision control allow using leftover sheet on future jobs. Prototype-heavy programs with frequent rev changes rarely benefit—plan material as if remnants will not save you.
What to review before release
- Can internal cutouts become separate usable parts?
- Are grain notes limited to features that need them?
- Do tab/slot features force blank sizes that destroy nest density?
- Is thickness standardized across a kit so nests can combine?
